Pengertian Konseling

Counseling dalam kamus bahasa Inggris berkaitan dengan counsel, yang mempunyai arti sebagai berikut: nasihat (to obtion counsel); anjuran (to give counsel); pembicaraan (to ask counsel). Dengan demikian, counseling diartikan sebagai pemberian nasihat, pemberian anjuran, dan pembicaraan dengan bertukar pikiran (Winkel dan Hastuti, 2007:34).

Konseling dapat diartikan sebagai “proses bantuan yang diberikan oleh seorang konselor atau terapi terhadap individu (konseli/pasien) yang mengalami emotional disturbed, dalam suasana dialog yang dinamis dan penuh penerimaan agar konseli dapat mengenal kepercayaan-kepercayaan atau pikiran-pikiran yang logis, sehingga menemukan dan menghilangkan ketidaklogisan kepercayaan atau pikirannya yang menjadi sumber penyebab masalah yang dihadapinya (Yusuf, 2016:216).

Aldridge (2014:4) yang mengatakan bahwa “Counselling is a general term for exploring emotional problems by talking them through with a trained counsellor or therapist”. Pendapat tersebut dapat diartikan bahwa proses konseling terjadi karena terdapat individu yang bermasalah dan terdapat juga individu lain yang secara sukarela mempunyai keinginan untuk memberi bantuan untuk menyelesaikan masalah yang dihadapi individu yang bermasalah tersebut

Gibson & Mitchell (1995:35) menjelaskan “Counselling denotes a professional relationship between a trained counsellor and a client. This relationship is usually person-to-person, although it may sometimes involve more than two people. It is designed to help clients to understand and clarify their views of their lifespace, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or interpersonal nature.”

Nurihsan (2007:10) menyebutkan bahwa konseling adalah upaya membantu individu melalui proses interaksi yang bersifat pribadi antara konselor dan konseli agar konseli mampu memahami diri dan lingkungannya, mampu membuat keputusan dan menentukan tujuan berdasarkan nilai yang diyakininya sehingga konseli merasa bahagia dan efektif perilakunya.

ASCA (American School Counselor Assosiation), yang menyatakan konseling merupakan hubungan tatap muka yang bersifat rahasia, penuh dengan sikap penerimaan dan pemberian kesempatan dari konselor kepada klien (Nurihsan, 2007:11).

Lewis (dalam Prayitno dan Amti, 2004:101) berpendapat bahwa konseling adalah proses mengenai individu yang sedang mengalami masalah (klien) dibantu untuk merasa dan bertingkah laku dalam suasana yang lebih menyenangkan melalui interaksi dengan seseorang yang tidak bermasalah, yang menyediakan informasi dan reaksi-reaksi yang merangsang klien untuk mengembangkan tingkah laku yang memungkinnya berperan secara lebih efektif bagi dirinya sendiri dan lingkungannya.

Smith (dalam Wilis, 2007:17) yang menyatakan bahwa konseling merupakan suatu proses dimana konselor membantu konseli (klien) agar ia dapat memahami dan menafsirkan fakta-fakta yang berhubungan dengan pemilihan, perencanaan, dan penyesuaian diri sesuai dengan kebutuhan individu.

Dryden dan Feltham (1994:144) mengemukakan “Counselling is a principled relationship characterised by the application of one or more psychological theories and a recognised set of communication skills, modified by experience, intuition and other interpersonal factors, to clients’ intimate concerns, problems or aspirations. Its predominant ethos is one of facilitation rather than of advice-giving or coercion. It may be of very brief or long duration, take place in an organisational or private practice setting and may or may not overlap with practical, medical and other matters of personal welfare. It is both a distinctive activity undertaken by people agreeing to occupy the roles of counsellor and client . . . and an emerging profession . . . It is a service sought by people in distress or in some degree of confusion who wish to discuss and resolve these in a relationship which is more disciplined and confidential than friendship, and perhaps less stigmatising than helping relationships offered in traditional medical or psychiatric settings.”

Interpretasi peneliti :

Berdasarkan definisi konseling di atas, dapat dikemukakan bahwa konseling adalah proses bantuan profesional yang bersifat pribadi dan rahasia, dilakukan oleh konselor terlatih untuk membantu individu yang mengalami masalah dalam memahami dirinya, mengembangkan potensi, menyelesaikan konflik batin, serta mengambil keputusan yang tepat melalui pendekatan psikologis dan komunikasi terapeutik. Konseling bukan sekadar memberi nasihat, melainkan membangun relasi yang memungkinkan konseli tumbuh, berubah, dan berfungsi lebih adaptif dalam kehidupan pribadi maupun sosialnya.
